1915 Johnson County Courthouse

Johnson County’s historic courthouse, built in 1895, was rehabilitated in 1996 after a large group of citizens vehemently protested the Johnson County Commission’s plans to build a new courthouse outside of the downtown area. Several architectural firms were asked to present plans to rehabilitation plans to the community and the firm of Carter Watkins of Monroe, GA, was chosen.
Attached are scans of the history of the Johnson County Courthouse as presented in 1995 by Carter Watkins & Associates.

Looking for a Johnson County “spooky house”

Johnson County is a certified Georgia Camera Ready county. An official ceremony will take place in the fall to welcome us into the Camera Ready Program. We are receiving requests for locations being sought by the GA film locations board. One of those just came in. Does Johnson County have a house that looks haunted that would fill the following description: spooky-looking, aged/run down (but habitable) and preferably be out in the country or have lots of land around it.

If you know of such a house (similar to the one pictured), please photograph it and reply to this web site  along with your contact information and the location of the property.

Thank you very much,
Rebecca Lovett

The Scenes of Johnson County Photo Contest sponsored by Better Hometown of Wrightsville, announces the winning photographs. Sammy Hall’s
two photos of buildings in downtown Wrightsville were chosen as 1st and 2nd place winners over other entries. The contest was held in an
effort to obtain photos for the Georgia Camera Ready Program, which allows production companies to view scenes of Georgia’s authentic landscapes and
downtowns for possible film and TV productions. Most of Sammy’s entries focused on Wrightsville’s historic downtown buildings. Congratulations Sammy!

Rebecca Lovett, Johnson County’s Camera Ready liaison,is shown presenting Sammy Hall with a check for taking first and second places in the Better Hometown sponsored Scenes of Johnson County Photo Contest.

Library Fighting Back!

Surviving in bleak economic times and facing a reduction in funding from the State of Georgia, the Harlie Fulford Memorial Library is fighting back! The local library board has formed a Friends of the Library non-profit organization whose mission is to promote interest in, use of, and public support for the library. As demands for library services grow and budget cuts increase, the local Friends of the Library group hopes to counteract  budget shortfalls and supplement the library’s needs.
Local support for the library is funded by the Johnson County Commission, the City of Wrightsville, and the Johnson County Board of Education and while these funds remain in place for the coming year it is hoped that The Friends of the Library can make a meaningful contribution to an important local institution.
Friends of the Library board members agree that the success of the library’s non-profit will hinge on community support. Everyone is encouraged to join. Annual dues are: Students: $1.00; Individual: $10.00; Family: $20.00; Donor: $25.00 and Sponsor: $50.00. The Friends of the Library organization is listed as a 501(c)3 meaning  that individual donations qualify as being tax exempt. Checks for dues and donations may be mailed to the Harlie Fulford Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 69, Wrightsville,  31096.
A Book Sale held the first week in April was the group’s fundraising kickoff and proved to be a huge success!
