loran-georgia-sports-communicationsThe Wrightsville-Johnson County Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting on February 12th at the First United Methodist Church Social Hall with a full crowd of attendees.  Speaker for the event was hometown boy, Loran Smith, Executive Secretary of UGA’s Bulldog Club.

Georgia Bulldogs Athletic News says the following about Loran: “There may be no more versatile staff member at the University of Georgia Athletic Association than Loran Smith.

“The former long time executive secretary of the Georgia Bulldog Club and 1959 Bulldog track MVP and 1960 captain has been an important building block of what has become one of the nation’s top athletic programs.

“Smith has spent most of his professional life at UGA after graduation and during that time has held positions as Assistant Sports Information Director, Business Manager, and Executive Director of the Georgia Bulldog Club, and member of the Athletic Association Development Office.

“He’s also served as executive producer of the football coach’s television show, packager of the game radio broadcasts, host of the Mark Richt post-game locker room show, and sideline reporter during the games. He still serves as co-host of the pre-game Tailgate Show.

“A native of Wrightsville, Ga., Smith is a past chairman of the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997. Smith is a former publicity director of the Coaches All-America game and former Secretary of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and Executive Director of the Georgia High School All-Star games. He is married to the former Myrna Warren of Covington, Ga., and they have two children, Camille and Kent, both graduates of the University of Georgia. They have four grandchildren.”

In addition to a tasty meal served by Teresa’s Catering the Chamber voted two new members to their board: Michael Harrison and Penny Foskey. During the business meeting, George Milligan presented Donnie Sweat of Sweats and Associates with the distinctive honor of Chamber Member of the Year.

Nine years ago Johnson County was contacted to be a part of the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trail s, trails that travel across state borders on historic driving routes throughout Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.  Each trail follows the historic route of one of the American Civil War’s major military campaigns or other important events.  After a decision by the local commissioners that they were unable to back Johnson County’s proposed inclusion in the trail at a cost of $2500.00, the local Better Hometown and Chamber of Commerce organizations obtained donations from local businesses and citizens in order to make it happen.

After much red tape and unexpected delays, it is expected that the Jefferson Davis leg of the trail, which includes Wrightsville, will soon have its interpretive marker on the square.  At the September Johnson County Commission meeting the commissioners gave their approval to continue with the project locally.

Better Hometown and the Chamber of Commerce wish to thank the following donors, who made Johnson County’s inclusion in the Civil War Heritage Trail possible:

Hilton Holton, Jeanette Caneega, Robinson Rentals, M.W. Hoover, Mary Jo Stephens, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Norris, Ishaque Tekrawala, Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Holmes, Charlene Milligan, Wrightsville-Johnson County Chamber of Commerce, City of Wrightsville, Better Hometown of Wrightsville, Donald Smith, Johnson Grays, Carl Sumner, Jimmy Cook, Lattie Price, and Helen Jackson.
